The Everetts of Marion County, Arkansas |
This is one of several attempts to sort out the family of Everetts who lived in Marion County, Arkansas, in the early to middle 1800s. Most of the survivors of the Tutt-Everett War made their way to Texas at one time or another and helped populate several counties, most notably Bosque and Coryell. Among the other surnames intricately connected with these Everetts are Hudson, Kester, George, and Goodall.
Definitely a work in progress, this site needs the input of any and every researcher who can make corrections or additions. If you can offer an improvement on anything listed here, please let us know! You can use the e-mail link below.

Earl Berry History of
Marion County Arkansas Chapter Eight "The
Tutt-Everett War" by W B Flippin

The father of the Everett
men who were involved in the Tutt-Everett War was one Jeremiah Everett.
Using Jeremiah as the pivotal person, this history is dividied into three
sections:
|
Part Two: Jeremiah Everett Part Three: The Descendants of Jeremiah Everett |
|
|
All we know of George Everett is that he married Mary Taylor, daughter of John and Alice Taylor, and that they were the parents of (among others, probably) Thomas Everett. George and Mary lived in Northumberland County, Virginia. [7, 23].
Mary Taylor's mother was Alice Gascoigne. Her family was a prominent part of the English nobility, and crossed with many of the major lines in English history, including the Mobrays and the Nevilles. Among her ancestors are a few Cornwallis names, according to at least one lineage. Queen Elizabeth II has Gascoigne roots, as does George Washington. On the "Family Tree Farm" I am working on adding a few more of her generations.
John Taylor's family has some celebrated cousins as well. Claims have been made that Presidents Zachary Taylor, James Madison, and Abraham Lincoln all trace to the Taylors of Northumberland County, Va.
Thomas Everett was born about
1659 in Northumberland County, Virginia. He and his wife, Elizabeth
(maiden name unknown), had eleven children:
John,
who married Elizabeth Craven
Thomas,
who married Ruth Denny
William
Winnifred,
who married William Pullen
Elizabeth,
who married Thomas Pullen
Mary
Rawleigh, who married Sarah [Note: Our Jeremiah Everett was their grandson.]
Jesse
Sarah

In Northumbria Collectanae 1645-1720 it is recorded that Thomas Everett had two orphans, William and Mathew Garrett, bound to him. He was to teach them shoemaking. On 26 July 1756, Mathew Garrett was one of the witnesses to Thomas's will. After Thomas's death, the inventory of his possessions consisted of shoemaker's tools.
The birth date of Thomas and Elizabeth's son Rawleigh (sometimes spelled Rawley) Everett is uncertain, ranging in various sources vetween 1691 and 1710. His wife's name was Sarah; her maiden name is not known to us. Rawleigh and Sarah lived in Lancaster County, Virginia. According to Rawleigh's will, dated 9 December 1756, he and Sarah had sons Simeon (various spelled Simmons and Simmonds), Leroy, John andWilliam. It is believed that Rawleigh died in Lancaster County at the age of 47 years.
Simeon Everett, son of Rawleigh
and Sarah Everett, is said by family tradition to have been born around
1755, although the date of his birth may have been a little earlier.
His place of birth was probably Lancaster County, Virginia. In the
early 1770s, Simeon traveled with two of his cousins--sons of his aunt
Winifred Pullen--to Bedford County, Virginia. [18] The identity
of his first wife is uncertain, as is the place of their marriage.
According to a ledger kept by the family, Simeon and his first wife had
two children:
Jeremiah
Everett, born 6 April 1771 [Note: His descendants are those
listed in this web site.]
Nancy
Everett, born 5 September 1774
Apparently, Simeon's wife
died soon after Nancy's birth, and Simeon married a second wife, Virginia
Elizabeth Nelms, in 1775. Family tradition indicates that the marriage
took place in Queen Anne's County, Maryland, but this information has not
been verified. [7] The new family settled in Bedford County.
It is recorded that during the Revolutionary War, Simeon sold food to the
Continental Army. According to his will, he owned a great deal of
land and several slaves. Simeon and Elizabeth had seven children,
all born in Bedford County, Virginia: [7]
Thomas
Ewell Everett born 3 July 1776
Jesse
Everett born 21 September 1778
John
E Everett born 28 January 1780
Samuel
Everett born 3 April 1782
Elizabeth
Everett born about 1784
William
Everett born 1 September 1785
Hulda
Everett born in 1787
Simeon died in Bedford County in November of 1822. [7]
Note: Clicking on a name will take you to more detailed information about that person and, if available, a listing of his or her children. Color-coding has been used for clarity. For example, all the information about John Saunders Everett and his descendants appears in red type. The write-ups about Thomas Ewell and his descendants are in green, and so on.

Jeremiah may have made his living by raising tobacco and perhaps through land speculation as well, since he sold his land about every four years. He and a man named William Sanders had a tavern, and Jeremiah also ran a grist mill. [7]
When Simeon Everett died, Jeremiah inherited an equal share along with the rest of his family. The will gave him a slave whom he was to share with his brother until his brother could pay him $100 and buy out Jeremiah's share of the slave. This must have indeed happened, because on the first year's tax rolls, Jeremiah has a slave and his brother has none. The following year, the brother has a slave, while Jeremiah does not. Jeremiah is never listed as having a slave after leaving Kentucky. [7]
John Saunders Everett, son of Jeremiah Everett, was born in 1796 (the date on his tombstone) in Kentucky. He marriedSusanah Emmaline Franks, probably in Rhea County, Tennessee. [13] Susanah was born 19 May 1808. Their children were: [8, 11]

However, in the 1940s when Fort Hood was established on the land, the United States government had a number of graves moved to other locations. At that time John S and Susanah were reburied in Killeen in Bell County.
Nancy Adaline Everett was born to John Saunders and Susan Emmaline Everett in 1822 in Tennessee. She andSabot Smith were married 7 June1846 in Greene County, Missouri. Sabot was born in 1821 in Tennessee. Nancy and Sabot had six children: [11]

Jesse Saunders Everett died 7 April 1910 in Texas. After his death, all Martha's children except Susan left home and pretty much stayed away from Coryell County from then on. [13]
John Ewell Everett was born to John Saunders and Susanah Emmaline Everett on 15 November 1829 in McMinn County, Tennessee. He and Hester Ann Bruner were married 13 December 1857 in Bosque County, Texas. Hester was born 2 June 1843 in Monroe County, Indiana. John and Hester and their family lived in the counties of Coryell and McLennan. During the Civil War, John served in the Confederate Army Company A 30th Regiment Texas Cavalry organized in Coryell County, mustered 1 July 1862. John and Hester had fifteen children:

Cynthia Caroline Everett was born to John Saunders and Susanah Emmaline Everett on 23 August 1847. She and John Milton Blackwell were married 20 March 1867 in Jesse's home in Coryell County, Texas. John Milton was a brother of Jesse Saunders Everett's first wife, Martha Jane Blackwell. He was born 19 June 1840. Cynthia and John Blackwell had seven children:
To protect their boys from getting involved in a feud that was brewing in Coryell County, the Blackwells moved to Lampasas County. John died 28 January 1914. Cynthia became blind in her later life, and her children looked after her. She died 1 March 1935, and is buried with John in Lampasas County.

Ewell was born in Kentucky on 12 November 1800. He and Lucinda Hudson were married in 1824. Lucinda was born 29 May 1808 in Kentucky. [3]
About 1847 Thomas Ewell Everett came into Valley Mills and claimed land from the Bosque River at Valley Mills to Childress Creek, which he and his wife and children owned for many years. [2, p 2]

and Nancy were first cousins. John's mother, Mary J Hudson Wood,
was a sister to Nancy's mother, Lucinda Hudson Everett.
Jesse N Everett was born to Thomas Ewell and Lucinda Everett on 6 April 1838 in Arkansas. He married Roxianne Angel, daughter of his own first cousin Louisa Jane Everett. Jesse and Roxianne had eight children, all born in Bosque County, Texas:
Roxianne died 11 March 1906, and Jesse died 28 July of the same year. They are buried in Meridian Cemetery in Bosque County. [21]
Jesse N Everett was born about 1804 in Barren County, Kentucky. His wife was named Sarah. Her maiden name may have been Hudson but more likely was Ramsey. [7] Jesse and Sarah had five children:

While the family lived in Marion County, Arkansas, Jesse was elected Colonel of the Militia. [4] About 1845 Jesse, along with a man named Jacob Stratton, moved to Texas [4, 6], and settled in Dallas County.
After Sim and Bart were killed in Arkansas in the fight of 4 July 1849, Jesse heard of the death of his brothers and went to Arkansas to avenge their deaths. Eventually he and Jacob Stratton and a group of friends, who were supposed to be guarding a group of arrested Kings, killed several of them. After one of Jesse Everett's men finally killed Hamp Tutt and they considered their vengeance to be complete, Jesse and Stratton and some friends left in canoes down White River. They went by steamboat down the Mississippi and up the Red River to Shreveport where Jesse died suddenly of cholera. "Thus ended the Tutt and Everett War. . . ." [4]
The date of Jesse's death was 28 December 1850. [7] Somewhat different information is given in the 1850 Mortality Schedule of Texas, which gives a death date of December 1849 and place of death as Dallas County, Texas. [13]
Sim
was born around 1805 in Kentucky. He marriedSusanah
Hudson in Rhea County, Tennessee, in 1820. In 1826, while she was
pregnant with their third child, she submitted a divorce decree to the
Tennessee legislature stating that Sim had left her for another woman and
did not intend to cohabit with her again. Sim's second wife was Leah
Franns (or Franks), who was born in Kentucky around 1804. [14]
Researchers have been unable to determine who Sim and Susanah's three children
were. [7] Sim is known to have had ten children. The three
oldest--Albert, Arch, and Louisa Jane--were born before the divorce, so
more than likely they were Susanah's.

In the 1880 census of Nolan County, Texas, Leah, age 76, is living with her daughter Manerva. Family tradition has persistently suggested that Leah was related in some way to the famous frontiersman Daniel Boone. Interestingly, in this census record, Leah is listed as Leah Boon. [14]

Albert Everett was a child of Sim Everett and most likely of Sim's first wife, Susanah. He was born around 1822. There is no information available about his marriage. He died at the Battle of Dove Creek on 8 January 1865. [14] According to W Haney Everett's probate, Albert had three children--Albert Jr, Nancy, and Aaron--who lived at Ordway, Colorado. [2] [8]
Arch
Everett was a child of Sim Everett and most likely of Sim's first wife,
Susanah. He was born in 1823. [14] He married Mary G (maiden
name unknown). Arch and Mary are shown in the Bosque County, Texas,
1860 census records with a three-year-old son named Albert M. The
1870 Bosque County census records show him with eight children, some of
whom are believed to belong to Arch's brother Albert. The names and
ages of the eight children are as follows:
Orin, age 14, male
Marion, age 12, male
Nancy, age 10, female
Frank, age 9, male
Albert, age 8, male
John H, age 6, male
Nancy, age 5, female
Hyrum, age 3, male
The
date of Arch's death is not known, but he is not found in any census records
after 1870.
Louisa Jane Everett was born to Sim and Leah Everett in 1825 in Tennessee. She married Albert E "Burton" Angel. [14] Records vary somewhat, but it seems that Louisa Jane and Burton had eight children:

Jasper Everett was born to Sim and Leah Everett on 1 March 1829 in Maury County, Tennessee. He came to Texas about 1854 and moved with his family to Tom Green County near San Angelo. [2, p2]
According to the typed list with the heading "Birth and Death's of Jasper Everrets," Jasper Newton Everett was born in Murry [Maury] County, Tennessee on 1 March 1829. He died at Rodeo, New Mexico on 24 December 1909, at the age of 80 years and ten months. His wife, Nancy Harrison Everett, was born in Randolph County, Arkansas on 29 June 1838. She died in Bosque Co. July 19, 1880, at the age of 42.
According to Lori Jacox, Nancy's middle name was Harrison, and her maiden name was Farmer. [14] The aforementioned typed sheet lists the following, who seem to be children of Jasper and Nancy: [1]

After
Nancy died, Jasper remarried and had a son namedDosier
or Dosin Everett. [14] Upon the probate of Jefferson Davis Everett's
will , after his death in December 1894, his brother James Franklin Everett
was named Administrator of his estate. Among the heirs listed in
the probate are:
Jasper N Everett, father
J N Everett, brother [no other records show this person]

Minerva was born to Sim and Leah Everett in 1831 in Arkansas. She married her first cousin William Everett, son of Thomas Ewell Everett. They made their home in Safford, Arizona. Minerva and William had two children: [14]

|
| Juliana Everett | December 1860 | George W Shipman |
| William Everett | April 1861 | [single as of 1900] |
In the 1880 Nolan County, Texas, census, a child named Nancy L, is living with Minerva and is listed as a daughter. Nancy was nine years old at that time and more than likely died before the next census was taken. In the 1900 census, Minerva lives with her unmarried son William; Juliana and her family are living next door. [14]
Nancy was born to Sim and Leah Everett in 1833. She married a Robertson and lived at Cottonwood, Texas. No further information about her family is available.
George was born to Sim and Leah Everett in 1836. He fought in the Civil War. We have no information about his marriage; however, the probate of William Haney Everett states that George has two children: Mrs Settie Clafin and Sanders Everett. George is buried next to his niece Roxy Angel Everett and her family in Meridian Cemetery in Bosque County, Texas. [14]
According to a typed list of "Births and Deaths of David Jones Family," Sarah Ann Everett was born in Arkansas on 16 February 1838. She married David Jones, who was born 9 November 1826 in Kentucky. According to a list made by one family member, David and Sarah had nine children, shown in the following table. Since the oldest child's birth date is only nine years after Sarah's, perhaps Sarah's correct year of birth is 1828 instead of 1838, or perhaps Mary Jane was David's child by a previous marriage. [1]

Sim Jr and Jane's home was built on W H (Haney) Everett property. Later Sim Jr bought 320 acres of the W H Everett property. He gave the land for a Methodist Church called Center Hill, which was also used as a school.
Jane died at age 39, leaving the three girls, ages five, seven, and eleven. They had several aunts who helped teach them to care for themselves and the home. Sim Jr was a kind, helpful father. He helped the girls sew their clothes, and the stitches in the garments were as short and neat as if they had been made with a sewing machine. By occupation, Sim Jr was a farmer and rancher who made his living mainly through cattle and other livestock. He died in August of 1895. [2, p 5]

"Bettie" was born to Sim and Leah Everett in 1844. She and C J Gossett were married on 2 March 1864. By 1870 she is living in Bosque County as a head of household, near her brothers and sisters. Her mother, Leah Everett, is living with her. Also listed in the household are three female children: Ednez, Alice R, and Alice Zennett (or Bennett). [14]
On 12 January 1871, Bettie married J W Vanzant. [14] They are listed in W Haney Everett's probate record as living at Carlton, Texas. [8]
Matilda Everett was born about 1806. She and Jesse Hudson were married in Rhea County, Tennessee on 10 March 1820. This is the same day that Matilda's brother Sim Everett married Susannah Hudson. Apparently, Jesse and Susannah were not brother and sister, but they may have been cousins. While they were living in Tennessee, Matilda and Jesse had four children. About 1830 they moved to George's Creek Community, west of Yellville in Marion County, Arkansas. There Jesse built a dam and installed the first cotton gin in Marion County. Later he added a sawmill and corn mill. Five children were born to Matilda and Jesse in Marion County for a total of nine: [17]

* Minerva and William Wood had one son, George. William was one of the victims of the Mountain Meadows Massacre in 1857. After his death, Minerva married Joel Northcott.
William Haney Hudson was born to Matilda and Jesse Hudson about 1822 in Tennessee, probably in Rhea or McMinn County. In the early 1840s he married Jane Breedlove. No children were born to William Haney and Jane. It is not known whether the marriage ended due to death or to separation, but around 1843 William Haney marriedSarah Northcott. Sarah was a daughter of Joel Baker Northcott, who later married William Haney's sister Manerva Jane. William Haney operated a blacksmith shop in Yellville, Arkansas, and traded in livestock. In the early 1870s the family moved to Whitney in Hill County, Texas, and lived there the rest of their lives. William Haney and Sarah both died around 1885. [17]
William Haney and Sarah had six children: [17]
Martha Jane Hudson was born to Matilda and Jesse Hudson on 4 July 1826 in central Tennessee. She and David Asher were married 20 December 1849. They lived in Marion County, Arkansas, until about 1853, at which time they moved to Stone County, Missouri, and settled near the James River between Cape Fair and Galena, Missouri. Martha Jane and David had three children while living in Arkansas: Leonard, Jesse, andWilliam. After they moved to Missouri, they had four more children: James,J.N., Francis, andSarah Jane. Martha Jane died in Missouri in 1863, and David is believed to have been killed in Arkansas around the same time. [17]
Jeremiah
Hudson was born to Matilda and Jesse Hudson about 1828 in central Tennessee.
He married Adaline Thomason, a sister of Eliza
Thomason, who married Jeremiah's brother James Sanders Hudson. Jeremiah
and Adaline had two daughters,Rebecca and Matilda.
Jeremiah is thought to have been killed during the Civil War. [17]
Nancy Anne Hudson was born to Matilda and Jesse Hudson about 1829 in central Tennessee. Around the age of nineteen she marriedAdrian "Whistling" Howard. For a time they made their home in George's Creek community in Marion County, then they moved to Jimmy's Creek, also in Marion County. Around 1870 the family moved to Valley Mills in Bosque County, Texas. Sometime in the 1890s they moved to Oklahoma. Nancy and Adrian had two sons: Lewis C, born while they lived at George's Creek, and Byron A, born at Jimmy's Creek. [17]
Manerva Jane Hudson was born to Matilda and Jesse Hudson in the George's Creek community in Marion County on 13 December 1832. In the early 1850s she married William Edward Wood, who became one of the victims of the Mountain Meadows Massacre. Manerva had been left in Arkansas because she was expecting a child. The child, born after William's death, was named George Edward Wood. He was born in 1855 and eventually died in Comanche County, Texas.
A few
years later, around 1859, Manerva marriedJoel Baker
Northcott, a widower with six children. One of his daughters, Sarah,
had married Manerva's brother William Haney Hudson several years before.
When Manerva married Joel, they moved with their children from George's
Creek to the Sugar Loaf community in northwestern Marion County.
They had three children:
William
T Northcott, born in 1860 and died in 1864
Matilda
Virginia Northcott, born 12 June 1861
Nancy
Catherine Northcott, born 9 February 1863
On 15 September 1874 the family moved to a farm near White Rock, Texas. They made subsequent moves to Comanche and to Calf Creek in McCulloch County, where Manerva died in November of 1918. She is buried in Calf Creek Cemetery; Joel is buried in Downing, Texas.
Jasper Hudson was born to Matilda and Jesse Hudson about 1835 in Arkansas. No further information about him is available. He does not appear in the Marion County 1870 census records and may have died before then, possibly in the Civil War. [17]
John B Hudson was born to Matilda and Jesse Hudson on 28 Nov 1840 in the George's Creek community of Arkansas. He served as a Confederate soldier during the Civil War. After the war's end, he married Malisa Catherine Parker and homesteaded land near his father's place. He lived at the same location the rest of his life and made his living by farming and raising stock. He died 6 November 1916. Malisa died almost ten years later, on 30 July 1926. They are buried in George's Creek Cemetery. John and Malisa had four children: [17]
James Sanders Hudson was born to Matilda and Jesse Hudson on 15 December 1842 at George's Creek in Marion County. Before marriage he served as a Confederate soldier. Around the time the war ended, he married Eliza Elizabeth Thomason, whose sister Adaline married James's brother Jeremiah. James was postmaster at George's Creek, operated a store in connection with the post office, and freighted merchandise by wagon from the nearest train station, which was at Springfield, Missouri. Around 1900 he sold the store and moved to his homestead on George's Creek. There the family lived until Eliza Elizabeth died on 2 March 1923. Soon afterward, James bought the hotel in Pyatt, Arkansas. He and his daughter Manerva Belle operated the hotel until James died 8 September 1928. He and Eliza Elizabeth are buried in the George's Creek Cemetery. They had five children: [17]
Haney Everett was born around 1808. He never married. He came to Texas about 1847 and settled on approximately 640 acres of land near Valley Mills. Haney's estate was probated in Bosque County, Texas, in 1900. His heirs were the children and grandchildren of his siblings.
Bart Everett is said to have been born in 1814, most likely in Kentucky. He married Nancy Wilson on 23 July 1835 in Arkansas. Nancy was born 13 August 1818. Her parents were Jim and Nancy Wilson. According to family legend, Nancy was half Cherokee. Bart and Nancy had five children: [12]

Bart was killed 4 Jul 1849, the same day as his brother Sim, in one of the Tutt-Everett fights in Marion County, Arkansas. Nancy subsequently married Calvin Tennyson, a widower who had several children of his own. Nancy and Calvin had a daughter,Nancy Caroline, who was born in 1852. By 1860 Nancy and Calvin were no longer living together. Nancy resumed the surname Everett, and Nancy Caroline, although she was the child of Calvin Tennyson, became known as Nancy Caroline Everett.
In 1868 the elder Nancy, along with her two sons, moved to Taney County, Missouri. She lived there with her sons until her death on 6 June 1884. She was buried in the Everett Cemetery, two miles up Swan Creek from Forsyth. Her grave is near those of her two sons and of other Everett family members.
Jim was born to Bart and Nancy Everett on 17 November 1843. It is not known whether Jim was ever married; however, there is a family story that when his daughter was being born, Jim rode a horse to death to be there. The last name of the woman was Garrison.
Jim's daughter was named Laura. She was born in 1867 and married Waldo Davidson in 1883.
Jim joined the Confederate Force on 19 July 1861 and deserted on 22 April 1862. Less than two years later he joined the Federal Army, 2nd Arkansas Infantry, Company K. He mustered out 8 August 1865. He is described as 5'6", black hair, dark eyes and complexion.
Jim and his brother Barton owned a store and saloon in Forsyth, Missouri, as well as property and a homestead out of town.. On 22 September 1883, both men were in their business when a man named Al Layton, having had too much to drink, started brandishing a gun. When Jim tried to disarm him, he shot both Jim and Bart, wounding Bart in the shoulder and killing Jim. Jim is buried in Everett Cemetery.
Barton Yell Everett, the son of Bart and Nancy Everett, was born 21 November 1848 in Yellville, Arkansas, several months after his father's death. He and his family lived in Arkansas until 1866 when he, his brother, and his mother moved to Forsyth in Taney County, Missouri. On 29 May 1881, he married Anna Elizabeth Everett, daughter of Henry Clay (relation to the Jeremiah Everetts unknown) and Mariah Louise Martin Everett. Anna was born 24 January 1885 near Liberty in Clay County, Missouri. Barton and Anna had nine children:

Barton was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Forsyth from 1875 to 1915. He died on 6 January 1918 in Forsyth and is buried in the Everett (Ragsdale) Cemetery.
Union Everett was born about 1815. She marriedIsaac William Kester Jr in September of 1833 (? [7]) in Arkansas. Isaac was born around 1805 in Lawrence County, Arkansas. They had five children: [9]

There is also a possibility, the subject of an ongoing debate and investigation, that one William "Billy" Kester may have been a son of Union and Isaac.
The death dates of Union and Isaac are not known to us. They both disappear from records between 1843 and 1850, at which time their five children are shown in census records as living with William and Nancy Goodall. [3]

Baptist Church, were married 16 October 1852 in Arkansas.
Joshua was born 22 June 1820 in Tennessee. Alsey was Joshua's second
wife. He and his first wife, Raena Mahala
Grinder, had six children: Samuel, James Robert, Louizy Jane, Bob,
Tabitha Dorcas, and Sarah Rowena. Joshua and Mahala went to Belton,
Texas, where Mahala died on 9 September 1851. Joshua returned by
way of Missouri to Arkansas, where he and Alsey were married.

Joshua and Alsey both died near Lexington in Van Buren County, Arkansas, Joshua on 8 January 1904 and Alsey on 29 June 1926 . They are buried at the Shady Grove Cemetery there with many of their children. [22]
Union, apparently named for her grandmother Union Everett Kester, was born 6 December 1859 at Marshall in Searcy County, Arkansas. On 16 August 1880, she gave birth to a son, James Alfred Light. About five years later she marriedGeorge Wesley Light. The marriage took place on 27 October 1885 in Crawford County, Arkansas. George Wesley is considered to be the same person as George W Towns Light, son ofYoung Kellar and Susan MundayLight--born about 1850 in Forsyth County, Georgia--although James Alfred's birth certificate states that his father was born in Yell County, Arkansas. It may be that Union, when supplying information for the birth certificate, believed in error that George was born in Yell County, since that is where he lived at the time. [22]
No records have been found on George Light after 1885. Union lived with her son, James, and his family in Oklahoma in her later years. James's daughter Myrtle recalled that her grandmother didn't seem to like children very much and stayed in her room a great deal of the time. Myrtle remembered a horse-drawn hearse taking her grandmother away when she died, which was around 1908. [22]
James was born 16 August 1880 in Searcy County, Arkansas, to Union Kester and George Wesley Light. According to family Bible records, he and Sarah Ethel Skinner were married 20 March 1901 in Morrilton, Arkansas. Sarah, known as Ethel in her later years, was born 25 June 1880 in Arkansas. Her parents were Finis Hugh Skinner and Mary L Carey. It is believed though not verified that Sarah was Native American by birth and raised by the Skinner family.
James
and Sarah had seven children:
In the 1910 Conway County census, James and Sarah and their three children were shown living on Olsen Street, next door to Sarah's parents. James's occupation was listed as carpenter. In 1920, the couple and their six children lived in Wetumka, Oklahoma, where they rented a house and James worked as a carpenter.
James and Sarah eventually divorced, and he marriedJewell Jackson. James died 29 October 1967 in Oklahoma City, where he is buried in Resthaven Cemetery. Sarah Ethel died 13 September 1970 in Oklahoma City. Jewell died 24 September 1994 in Oklahoma. [22]

Polly
was born to Union and Isaac Kester in October of 1836 in Marion County.
She and Esaias Calvin Baker were married around
1858. Calvin was born in 1836 in Wayne County, Tennessee. Polly
and Calvin had two children: [9]
Thomas Ewell Kester Sr (called "Ewell," according to the 1850 census) was born to Union and Isaac Kester about 1838 in Arkansas. His wife's given name was Louisa; her maiden name is unknown to us.* Ewell and Louisa married around 1879 in Arkansas and had one child, Thomas Ewell Kester Jr. Thomas Ewell Sr died sometime after 1903. [9]
[* According to a typewritten sheet of information about the David Jones family, there was a Mary Jane Jones born in Illinois on 10 October 1847 who "died July 21, 1871 as Louise Kester." It is yet to be ascertained why her given name was changed and whether or not she was Ewell Kester's wife.]
Isaac
Wilson Kester Sr was born to Union and Isaac Kester on 15 October 1839
in Marion County. He and Sinia Louisa Price
were married in Searcy County, Arkansas. Sinia was born 8 June 1848
to William "Buck" and Elizabeth Brewer Price. Isaac Sr and Sinia
had seven children:
Isaac died 11 February 1882, and Sinia died 14 March 1923. They are buried at Tomahawk in Searcy County. [9]
Louisa Jane Kester was born to Union and Isaac Kester about 1842 in Arkansas. She married Isaac Woodard, and they had one child that we know of, Sparlin Woodard. We do not know the dates of Louisa and Isaac's deaths. [9]
Nancy Everett was born about 1812. She marriedWilliam Goodall, whose brother Pleasant Goodall married Thomas Ewell Everett's daughter Julia Ann. According to Haney Everett's probate [8], Nancy and William had six children:

William died around 1853 in Marion County, Arkansas. After his death, Nancy and her children moved to Bosque County, Texas, in 1854.
William Barton Goodall was born to Nancy and William Goodall in 1849. He married Josephine Sartor, who was born in 1857. William received a warranty deed for land in Bosque County, Texas, from William Haney Everett in 1888. He also bought 105 acres adjoining this property from Frances Marion Goodall. Only a few yards from the home in which he was raised, he built a large house where he and Josephine reared their family of eight children:
The death of the third son, Robert Lee Goodall, occurred during an argument between his brother Sim and his cousin Rich, son of Pleasant and Juliann Everett. Robert stepped in front of Rich, who had pulled a gun, and Rich shot Robert. Rich was found guilty of murder and sentenced to twelve years in jail. He died in jail of tuberculosis shortly before he was to be released.
Josephine died in 1907, and William died in 1922. [16]

Myrtle Prince’s booklet lists Sarah Everett among Sim Everett’s siblings and states “married Murphy.” [2] Steve Bemrich does likewise. He has found that in 1850, the home of William and Nancy Everett Goodall contained Goodall, Kester (children of Union and Isaac), and Murphy children. The two Murphys are Simeon, age 19, and Leonidas, age 17. Both were born in Arkansas. [3] They have not been found in any later records, and the name of their father is not known. [9]
Jane Everett was married to a Goodall. Her heirs, according to Haney Everett's probate [8] and Steve Bemrich's page [3]:

The obituary of William and Edith’s son John states that father and mother both died when John was quite young, and that at the age of nineteen he assumed the responsibility of caring for five brothers and a sister. Although that number and gender of siblings does not agree with those listed in the census records, it does appear that Edith died before 1870, as the 1870 Wood County census records show William with a wife named Nancy, who was born around 1837 in Georgia. At that time all the children except Mary, who may have married and left home by then, were living with William and Nancy. William died in Quitman, Wood County, Texas, in 1873, and Nancy died in 1882.
