The Everetts of Marion County, Arkansas |
This is one of several attempts to sort out the family of Everetts who lived in Marion County, Arkansas, in the early to middle 1800s. Most of the survivors of the Tutt-Everett War made their way to Texas at one time or another and helped populate several counties, most notably Bosque and Coryell. Among the other surnames intricately connected with these Everetts are Hudson, Kester, George, and Goodall.
Definitely a work in progress, this site needs the input of any and every researcher who can make corrections or additions. If you can offer an improvement on anything listed here, please let us know! You can use the e-mail link below.

Earl Berry History of
Marion County Arkansas Chapter Eight "The
Tutt-Everett War" by W B Flippin

The father of the Everett
men who were involved in the Tutt-Everett War was one Jeremiah Everett.
Using Jeremiah as the pivotal person, this history is dividied into three
sections:
|
Part Two: Jeremiah Everett Part Three: The Descendants of Jeremiah Everett |
|
|
All we know of George Everett is that he married Mary Taylor, daughter of John and Alice Taylor, and that they were the parents of (among others, probably) Thomas Everett. George and Mary lived in Northumberland County, Virginia. [7, 23].
Mary Taylor's mother was Alice Gascoigne. Her family was a prominent part of the English nobility, and crossed with many of the major lines in English history, including the Mobrays and the Nevilles. Among her ancestors are a few Cornwallis names, according to at least one lineage. Queen Elizabeth II has Gascoigne roots, as does George Washington. On the "Family Tree Farm" I am working on adding a few more of her generations.
John Taylor's family has some celebrated cousins as well. Claims have been made that Presidents Zachary Taylor, James Madison, and Abraham Lincoln all trace to the Taylors of Northumberland County, Va.
Thomas Everett was born about
1659 in Northumberland County, Virginia. He and his wife, Elizabeth
(maiden name unknown), had eleven children:
John,
who married Elizabeth Craven
Thomas,
who married Ruth Denny
William
Winnifred,
who married William Pullen
Elizabeth,
who married Thomas Pullen
Mary
Rawleigh, who married Sarah [Note: Our Jeremiah Everett was their grandson.]
Jesse
Sarah

In Northumbria Collectanae 1645-1720 it is recorded that Thomas Everett had two orphans, William and Mathew Garrett, bound to him. He was to teach them shoemaking. On 26 July 1756, Mathew Garrett was one of the witnesses to Thomas's will. After Thomas's death, the inventory of his possessions consisted of shoemaker's tools.
The birth date of Thomas and Elizabeth's son Rawleigh (sometimes spelled Rawley) Everett is uncertain, ranging in various sources vetween 1691 and 1710. His wife's name was Sarah; her maiden name is not known to us. Rawleigh and Sarah lived in Lancaster County, Virginia. According to Rawleigh's will, dated 9 December 1756, he and Sarah had sons Simeon (various spelled Simmons and Simmonds), Leroy, John andWilliam. It is believed that Rawleigh died in Lancaster County at the age of 47 years.
Simeon Everett, son of Rawleigh
and Sarah Everett, is said by family tradition to have been born around
1755, although the date of his birth may have been a little earlier.
His place of birth was probably Lancaster County, Virginia. In the
early 1770s, Simeon traveled with two of his cousins--sons of his aunt
Winifred Pullen--to Bedford County, Virginia. [18] The identity
of his first wife is uncertain, as is the place of their marriage.
According to a ledger kept by the family, Simeon and his first wife had
two children:
Jeremiah
Everett, born 6 April 1771 [Note: His descendants are those
listed in this web site.]
Nancy
Everett, born 5 September 1774
Apparently, Simeon's wife
died soon after Nancy's birth, and Simeon married a second wife, Virginia
Elizabeth Nelms, in 1775. Family tradition indicates that the marriage
took place in Queen Anne's County, Maryland, but this information has not
been verified. [7] The new family settled in Bedford County.
It is recorded that during the Revolutionary War, Simeon sold food to the
Continental Army. According to his will, he owned a great deal of
land and several slaves. Simeon and Elizabeth had seven children,
all born in Bedford County, Virginia: [7]
Thomas
Ewell Everett born 3 July 1776
Jesse
Everett born 21 September 1778
John
E Everett born 28 January 1780
Samuel
Everett born 3 April 1782
Elizabeth
Everett born about 1784
William
Everett born 1 September 1785
Hulda
Everett born in 1787
Simeon died in Bedford County in November of 1822. [7]
Note: Clicking on a name will take you to more detailed information about that person and, if available, a listing of his or her children. Color-coding has been used for clarity. For example, all the information about John Saunders Everett and his descendants appears in red type. The write-ups about Thomas Ewell and his descendants are in green, and so on.

Jeremiah may have made his living by raising tobacco and perhaps through land speculation as well, since he sold his land about every four years. He and a man named William Sanders had a tavern, and Jeremiah also ran a grist mill. [7]
When Simeon Everett died, Jeremiah inherited an equal share along with the rest of his family. The will gave him a slave whom he was to share with his brother until his brother could pay him $100 and buy out Jeremiah's share of the slave. This must have indeed happened, because on the first year's tax rolls, Jeremiah has a slave and his brother has none. The following year, the brother has a slave, while Jeremiah does not. Jeremiah is never listed as having a slave after leaving Kentucky. [7]
John Saunders Everett, son of Jeremiah Everett, was born in 1796 (the date on his tombstone) in Kentucky. He marriedSusanah Emmaline Franks, probably in Rhea County, Tennessee. [13] Susanah was born 19 May 1808. Their children were: [8, 11]

However, in the 1940s when Fort Hood was established on the land, the United States government had a number of graves moved to other locations. At that time John S and Susanah were reburied in Killeen in Bell County.
Nancy Adaline Everett was born to John Saunders and Susan Emmaline Everett in 1822 in Tennessee. She andSabot Smith were married 7 June1846 in Greene County, Missouri. Sabot was born in 1821 in Tennessee. Nancy and Sabot had six children: [11]

Jesse Saunders Everett died 7 April 1910 in Texas. After his death, all Martha's children except Susan left home and pretty much stayed away from Coryell County from then on. [13]
John Ewell Everett was born to John Saunders and Susanah Emmaline Everett on 15 November 1829 in McMinn County, Tennessee. He and Hester Ann Bruner were married 13 December 1857 in Bosque County, Texas. Hester was born 2 June 1843 in Monroe County, Indiana. John and Hester and their family lived in the counties of Coryell and McLennan. During the Civil War, John served in the Confederate Army Company A 30th Regiment Texas Cavalry organized in Coryell County, mustered 1 July 1862. John and Hester had fifteen children:

Cynthia Caroline Everett was born to John Saunders and Susanah Emmaline Everett on 23 August 1847. She and John Milton Blackwell were married 20 March 1867 in Jesse's home in Coryell County, Texas. John Milton was a brother of Jesse Saunders Everett's first wife, Martha Jane Blackwell. He was born 19 June 1840. Cynthia and John Blackwell had seven children:
To protect their boys from getting involved in a feud that was brewing in Coryell County, the Blackwells moved to Lampasas County. John died 28 January 1914. Cynthia became blind in her later life, and her children looked after her. She died 1 March 1935, and is buried with John in Lampasas County.

Ewell was born in Kentucky on 12 November 1800. He and Lucinda Hudson were married in 1824. Lucinda was born 29 May 1808 in Kentucky. [3]
About 1847 Thomas Ewell Everett came into Valley Mills and claimed land from the Bosque River at Valley Mills to Childress Creek, which he and his wife and children owned for many years. [2, p 2]

and Nancy were first cousins. John's mother, Mary J Hudson Wood,
was a sister to Nancy's mother, Lucinda Hudson Everett.
Jesse N Everett was born to Thomas Ewell and Lucinda Everett on 6 April 1838 in Arkansas. He married Roxianne Angel, daughter of his own first cousin Louisa Jane Everett. Jesse and Roxianne had eight children, all born in Bosque County, Texas:
Roxianne died 11 March 1906, and Jesse died 28 July of the same year. They are buried in Meridian Cemetery in Bosque County. [21]
Jesse N Everett was born about 1804 in Barren County, Kentucky. His wife was named Sarah. Her maiden name may have been Hudson but more likely was Ramsey. [7] Jesse and Sarah had five children:

While the family lived in Marion County, Arkansas, Jesse was elected Colonel of the Militia. [4] About 1845 Jesse, along with a man named Jacob Stratton, moved to Texas [4, 6], and settled in Dallas County.
After Sim and Bart were killed in Arkansas in the fight of 4 July 1849, Jesse heard of the death of his brothers and went to Arkansas to avenge their deaths. Eventually he and Jacob Stratton and a group of friends, who were supposed to be guarding a group of arrested Kings, killed several of them. After one of Jesse Everett's men finally killed Hamp Tutt and they considered their vengeance to be complete, Jesse and Stratton and some friends left in canoes down White River. They went by steamboat down the Mississippi and up the Red River to Shreveport where Jesse died suddenly of cholera. "Thus ended the Tutt and Everett War. . . ." [4]
The date of Jesse's death was 28 December 1850. [7] Somewhat different information is given in the 1850 Mortality Schedule of Texas, which gives a death date of December 1849 and place of death as Dallas County, Texas. [13]
Sim
was born around 1805 in Kentucky. He marriedSusanah
Hudson in Rhea County, Tennessee, in 1820. In 1826, while she was
pregnant with their third child, she submitted a divorce decree to the
Tennessee legislature stating that Sim had left her for another woman and
did not intend to cohabit with her again. Sim's second wife was Leah
Franns (or Franks), who was born in Kentucky around 1804. [14]
Researchers have been unable to determine who Sim and Susanah's three children
were. [7] Sim is known to have had ten children. The three
oldest--Albert, Arch, and Louisa Jane--were born before the divorce, so
more than likely they were Susanah's.

In the 1880 census of Nolan County, Texas, Leah, age 76, is living with her daughter Manerva. Family tradition has persistently suggested that Leah was related in some way to the famous frontiersman Daniel Boone. Interestingly, in this census record, Leah is listed as Leah Boon. [14]

Albert Everett was a child of Sim Everett and most likely of Sim's first wife, Susanah. He was born around 1822. There is no information available about his marriage. He died at the Battle of Dove Creek on 8 January 1865. [14] According to W Haney Everett's probate, Albert had three children--Albert Jr, Nancy, and Aaron--who lived at Ordway, Colorado. [2] [8]
Arch
Everett was a child of Sim Everett and most likely of Sim's first wife,
Susanah. He was born in 1823. [14] He married Mary G (maiden
name unknown). Arch and Mary are shown in the Bosque County, Texas,
1860 census records with a three-year-old son named Albert M. The
1870 Bosque County census records show him with eight children, some of
whom are believed to belong to Arch's brother Albert. The names and
ages of the eight children are as follows:
Orin, age 14, male
Marion, age 12, male
Nancy, age 10, female
Frank, age 9, male
Albert, age 8, male
John H, age 6, male
Nancy, age 5, female
Hyrum, age 3, male
The
date of Arch's death is not known, but he is not found in any census records
after 1870.
Louisa Jane Everett was born to Sim and Leah Everett in 1825 in Tennessee. She married Albert E "Burton" Angel. [14] Records vary somewhat, but it seems that Louisa Jane and Burton had eight children:

Jasper Everett was born to Sim and Leah Everett on 1 March 1829 in Maury County, Tennessee. He came to Texas about 1854 and moved with his family to Tom Green County near San Angelo. [2, p2]
According to the typed list with the heading "Birth and Death's of Jasper Everrets," Jasper Newton Everett was born in Murry [Maury] County, Tennessee on 1 March 1829. He died at Rodeo, New Mexico on 24 December 1909, at the age of 80 years and ten months. His wife, Nancy Harrison Everett, was born in Randolph County, Arkansas on 29 June 1838. She died in Bosque Co. July 19, 1880, at the age of 42.
According to Lori Jacox, Nancy's middle name was Harrison, and her maiden name was Farmer. [14] The aforementioned typed sheet lists the following, who seem to be children of Jasper and Nancy: [1]

After
Nancy died, Jasper remarried and had a son namedDosier
or Dosin Everett. [14] Upon the probate of Jefferson Davis Everett's
will , after his death in December 1894, his brother James Franklin Everett
was named Administrator of his estate. Among the heirs listed in
the probate are:
Jasper N Everett, father
J N Everett, brother [no other records show this person]

Minerva was born to Sim and Leah Everett in 1831 in Arkansas. She married her first cousin William Everett, son of Thomas Ewell Everett. They made their home in Safford, Arizona. Minerva and William had two children: [14]

| Juliana Everett | December 1860 | George W Shipman |
| William Everett | April 1861 | [single as of 1900] |
In the 1880 Nolan County, Texas, census, a child named Nancy L, is living with Minerva and is listed as a daughter. Nancy was nine years old at that time and more than likely died before the next census was taken. In the 1900 census, Minerva lives with her unmarried son William; Juliana and her family are living next door. [14]
Nancy was born to Sim and Leah Everett in 1833. She married a Robertson and lived at Cottonwood, Texas. No further information about her family is available.
George was born to Sim and Leah Everett in 1836. He fought in the Civil War. We have no information about his marriage; however, the probate of William Haney Everett states that George has two children: Mrs Settie Clafin and Sanders Everett. George is buried next to his niece Roxy Angel Everett and her family in Meridian Cemetery in Bosque County, Texas. [14]
According to a typed list of "Births and Deaths of David Jones Family," Sarah Ann Everett was born in Arkansas on 16 February 1838. She married David Jones, who was born 9 November 1826 in Kentucky. According to a list made by one family member, David and Sarah had nine children, shown in the following table. Since the oldest child's birth date is only nine years after Sarah's, perhaps Sarah's correct year of birth is 1828 instead of 1838, or perhaps Mary Jane was David's child by a previous marriage. [1]

Sim Jr and Jane's home was built on W H (Haney) Everett property. Later Sim Jr bought 320 acres of the W H Everett property. He gave the land for a Methodist Church called Center Hill, which was also used as a school.
Jane died at age 39, leaving the three girls, ages five, seven, and eleven. They had several aunts who helped teach them to care for themselves and the home. Sim Jr was a kind, helpful father. He helped the girls sew their clothes, and the stitches in the garments were as short and neat as if they had been made with a sewing machine. By occupation, Sim Jr was a farmer and rancher who made his living mainly through cattle and other livestock. He died in August of 1895. [2, p 5]

"Bettie" was born to Sim and Leah Everett in 1844. She and C J Gossett were married on 2 March 1864. By 1870 she is living in Bosque County as a head of household, near her brothers and sisters. Her mother, Leah Everett, is living with her. Also listed in the household are three female children: Ednez, Alice R, and Alice Zennett (or Bennett). [14]
On 12 January 1871, Bettie married J W Vanzant. [14] They are listed in W Haney Everett's probate record as living at Carlton, Texas. [8]
Matilda Everett was born about 1806. She and Jesse Hudson were married in Rhea County, Tennessee on 10 March 1820. This is the same day that Matilda's brother Sim Everett married Susannah Hudson. Apparently, Jesse and Susannah were not brother and sister, but they may have been cousins. While they were living in Tennessee, Matilda and Jesse had four children. About 1830 they moved to George's Creek Community, west of Yellville in Marion County, Arkansas. There Jesse built a dam and installed the first cotton gin in Marion County. Later he added a sawmill and corn mill. Five children were born to Matilda and Jesse in Marion County for a total of nine: [17]
